Caring & Learning Together Advanced Sessions
Each session uses a combination of learning techniques including case studies, discussion, role play, video, etc. Participants who have completed the basic Caring and Learning Together course are invited to attend any of our 6 advanced sessions. All sessions are 3 hours in length. These sessions will build on the content from the CLT Program and will also give you new strategies to increase both your confidence and skill in your work.

Intimacy, Sexuality and Sexual Behaviours in Dementia
In this session, participants will:
- Identify the causes of sexual behaviours in clients
- Learn strategies for responding to sexual behaviours in cognitively intact and cognitively imparied clients
- Discuss ethical issues of competency surrounding client directed behaviours
Responding to Refusal, Agitation and Aggression
In this session, participants will:
- Identify factors that contribute to anxiety, refusal, and verbal/physical aggression
- Describe communication strategies that can defuse potentially aggressive behaviour
- Demonstrate physical safety techniques for responding to physically aggressive behaviour
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Personality Disorders
In this session, participants will:
- List the characteristics of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Personality Disorders
- Describe how these disorders affect behaviour in the older adult
- Discuss strategies for responding effectively to the challenges associated with these behavioural symptoms
Bathing Strategies and Techniques
In this session, participants will:
- Understand the bathing experience for a person with dementia
- Explore factors that make bathing challenging for clients with
dementia
- Identify alternatives to the traditional bath or shower
- Discuss an approach to bathing that addresses supportive communication, environmental adaptations and psychosocial/physiological factors
Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia
In this session, participants will:
- List the characteristics of Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia
- Describe how these disorders affect behaviour in the older adult
- Respond effectively to the challenges associated with these behavioural symptoms
Pain Assessment and Palliative Care in Dementia
In this session, participants will:
- Identify pain behaviours in cognitively impaired clients
- Discuss strategies to manage pain through non-pharmacological techniques
- Explore end-of-life issues associated with dementia
- Develop care strategies for providing end-of-life care to clients with dementia
